Letters to the Editor

Letter: Words matter, choose them carefully

The Nov. 3 letter to the editor “Shields has experience, knowledge to lead” expressed dismay over The Gazette’s endorsement of the “young woman” versus the “experienced” candidate in the 5th District council race between Ashley Vanorny and Justin Shields. What the letter really expressed was sexism.

What if the tables were turned and a writer were to reference an “old man” versus a “professional woman, experienced in the field of Information Technology and possessing energy and vision for the task of governing a city?”

Words matter a lot. Choose them carefully and respectfully.
