Letter: What has happened to American patriotism?

Forty years ago, Rick Monday was playing center field for the Chicago Cubs when two men jumped out of the stands at Dodger Stadium intent on burning our American flag. It was the fourth inning of a game between the Dodgers and the Cubs. Seeing the men fumbling with a can of lighter fluid, Monday raced over and snatched away the flag. When he came to bat during the next inning he was given a standing ovation.

Monday played 19 years in the big leagues. He played in three World Series and two All-Star Games and saved an American flag. When asked by people if it bothers him to be remembered more for saving an American flag than for all those years playing baseball, he replied “Hey, I’m proud of my upbringing. And those ideals were reinforced when I served in the U.S. Marine Corps.”

When asked what happened to the flag. His reply is always “I still have it in my den.”

Our question is, what has happened to our American patriotism — love for or devotion to one’s country?
