Letter: Voter ID is not necessary in Iowa

Is Voter ID good for Iowans? I do not think this is something we need.

We have been voting in Iowa for over 100 years and have not needed to show an ID. The auditors’ offices do a good job of registering people and checking their eligibility to vote — they have the information at the polls.

Studies show that Voter ID leads to voter suppression and we do not need this in Iowa. If one Iowan is disenfranchised, you disenfranchise all.

With all this said, it does look like some form of Voter ID will be presented. Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has proposed a non-photo ID and electronic poll books. This may be the answer, but it will be expensive and with so many budget cuts this Legislative session will the money be there?
