Letter: Student safety a concern for bus driver

I am a bus driver for the College Community (Prairie) School District. I am proud to pick up and deliver the students of the district from their homes, to school and home again. However, the conditions of the streets of Cedar Rapids has their safety and comfort tested every day.

We also are responsible for children who are mentally and physically challenged. The bouncing they endure does not help the pain they suffer from their conditions. I have not mentioned the wear and tear on the school buses.

The roads are deplorable on the southwest side, as well as the other three quadrants of Cedar Rapids. The city fathers have deemed it necessary to spend millions on sidewalks and bike lanes. Considering how few people walk and ride their bikes compared to the vehicles on our streets, the sensitivity of the city fathers seems to be misplaced.

I challenge the Cedar Rapids City Council to ride with me on a regular school bus throughout one of our routes to see and feel what our children have to endure coming from home and going home after school. If you accept this challenge, contact me at skcim3345@gmail.com. I hope to hear from you within the next 30 days so we can smooth out a schedule that is good for everyone.

If you decide to not accept this challenge, your constituents will realize that you are more interested in sidewalks and bike lanes than the comfort and safety of their own children.
