Letter: Silence amid over-policing

First they came for the people with the dirty license plates, but I did not say anything because I did not live on a gravel road.

Then they came for the ill who smoked marijuana, but I did not say anything because I didn’t smoke pot.

Then they came for the people who didn’t pay their traffic tickets, but I did not say anything because I’m the best driver ever, and never have had a ticket.

Then they came for people who left their cars running in their driveway, but I didn’t say anything still.

Then they came for the perceived mentally ill, but I did not say anything because I’m not mentally ill; and then they came for me, the innocent man, and there was no one left to tell.
