Letter: Road construction is in full force

Last year I lamented about the summer of the orange cone and when would it come to an end.

If you’ve spent any time driving around Cedar Rapids in the past few months it is painfully obvious that the road construction projects have started even earlier this year. It seems that city officials are intoxicated with all the road repair money coming in from LOST and the 10 cents per gallon increase in gasoline tax. They appear to be trying to spend it all before it burns a hole in their pockets. It has ramped up this year with major projects occurring adjacent to other major projects.

Navigating Cedar Rapids streets has never been more grueling. It feels to me like this could be a defining moment for Cedar Rapids and may change how we are perceived. Instead of the Parlor City we are turning into the Orange Cone City. Think of the negative connotations for Cedar Rapids. “Cedar Rapids — you can’t get there from here.” That, however, may seem a bit too cliché so I will offer that we have the opportunity to change our motto. Instead of being the City of Five Seasons we can be known as the City of Two Seasons — winter and construction.
