Letter: Obey the rules of the road for safety

I read Matthew Downey’s Sept. 12 letter to the editor “Cyclists have same road rights as autos” and I agree that bicyclists have the same right to the road as motorists. However, the bicyclists also need to know that they have to obey the same rules of the road as we motorists.

Recently, on the way home I came to the four way stop that I go through almost everyday. What did I see? Not one, but two, bicyclists blow through the stop signs. Neither one took the time to even slow down. The rules of the road are there for everyone’s safety and need to be obeyed by all users of the road.

So if the bicyclists want the same rights as cars when using the roads, they must obey the rules and that includes when they come to a four-way stop or a stop light and there are motorists in front of them, they must take their turn in line. I know of no special law that says bicyclists can ride down the shoulder and go to the front of the line.

To all the bicyclists in Cedar Rapids, I wish you well. There are so many distracted drivers that you need to obey all the rules and stay alert at all times.
