I support Monica Vernon for mayor of Cedar Rapids. She has the experience needed. She served on the Cedar Rapids City Council for eight years and was mayor pro tem for six years. Before that she served the city as chair of the Planning and Zoning Commission for over 10 years. Vernon says she’ll be a full-time mayor and I feel she will be up to speed on day one as she already knows where the opportunities are.
She says she doesn’t think the people always should have to come to City Hall to see the mayor. She says she will come to neighborhoods throughout the city and hold twice-a-month meetings. I like her idea of making short opening remarks and then spending the rest of the meetings listening and answering questions from the residents.
I also like the idea that she is open to fully examining the city’s approach to fixing up the streets — re-looking at the priority list, timelines, how repair is done and other issues. Then, she would share the report with citizens. I like this approach.
Vernon says this is our city. As a citizen and a taxpayer, I like that. She is open-minded and will work with all to make this a better city. Let’s elect Vernon as our next mayor.
