Letter: Lawmakers should step up and contribute

We read how our elected officials are cutting taxes, when in reality we are robbing Peter to pay Paul. It seems to me the middle class has a large burden to carry. Our insurance premiums go up (health, auto, home), our benefits at work go down and we work longer because we can’t afford the health care to retire. College tuition is out of sight. Kids are so far in debt when they get out of college it takes half a lifetime to repay.

It seems that taxpayers pay for an awful lot when it comes to our elected officials, retirement, health care, legal fees. We have to budget our money to live on, but have to pay more. It is weird that I never see or hear anything about congressmen, senators, etc., willing to pay their own insurance, retirement plan or anything that could help our debt from going up. It would be nice if they stepped it up, if even to pay a share of health insurance. I bet we would get something in place for the rest of us instead of dragging it out for years. It seems they could afford it a lot more than families struggling to stay ahead.

And I like movies and beer because I can’t afford to take expensive trips. I’d have to pay my airfare and accommodations.
