Congress is in session again after their summer break. They have 16 days to enact legislation to fund the fight against the Zika virus and to fund the government in order to avoid another shutdown.
The Republicans have placed “riders” on both these bills. Riders are pieces of proposed legislation which have nothing to do with the purpose of the bill itself.
Republicans have been obstructing legislation in this way for many years.
Congress should be voting these bills up or down based solely on the merits of the bills. Zika is already widespread in the country and federal money must be made available to fight it. It goes without saying that the government must continue to operate.
The stakes are too important to be playing political games.
