Letter: Kingsley Botchway is dedicated to social justice
As a student at the University of Iowa with personal experience in mental health recovery, I am writing to share why I support Kingsley Botchway for Iowa City Council At-Large. He inspires me with his unwavering dedication to social justice and racial equity in his leadership roles as city council member, mayor pro tem, and ICCSD director of equity and engagement.
Specifically, I am inspired by his work in addressing the problems our mental health community faces, including the need for mental health education, training, and programs that will help people recover rather than punish and ignore them. He helped to implement crisis intervention training to our officers and emergency personnel and places mental health care as a top funding priority to ensure affordable and accessible care.
My experience in facing the stigma and barriers that exist for mental illness in our community has pushed me to advocate for awareness and change in the mental health system. I am encouraged by the work he has done and will continue to do to address the needs of the mental health community, along with his compassion and commitment to making Iowa City a more inclusive and caring place to live in. I trust him in representing me and others with mental health concerns and am eager for the further progress he will make as one of our city councilors.
