It’s clear that The Republican Party does not have the consensus needed to significantly change health care by itself. It’s equally clear that any partisan solutions to health care are not robust in today’s political climate.
An opportunity presents itself to improve health care and today’s toxic political climate. A few courageous congressional leaders and governors around the country have promoted bipartisan solutions. Where is Iowa’s national leadership? It seems Iowa’s Senators and Congressman have sat idle in their offices waiting for party officials and lobbyist to hand them directives.
Healthcare needs bold action now and bipartisan solutions are the path forward. I ask Iowa’s elected leaders to take this incredible opportunity to put your constituents and your country ahead of your party and your insurance industry donors. Lasting stable progress needs cooperation and compromise. Healthcare is an area where common ground can be found, acted upon, and will lead to bipartisan progress in other areas.
Each party can wait to have political dominance in order to grab everything it wants with no compromise. But does that work? No, it does not. Please consider what your constituents accomplish every day in their work lives — find common ground even with people you don’t completely agree with or even like that much sometimes. Understand that you will not get everything your way. It’s what grown-ups do when they need to get things done.
