Letter: Hospital's Kid Captains program is inspiring
Many kudos to The Gazette for placing Alison Gowans’ report about the Hawkeyes Kid Captains program right smack on the front page of the Aug. 16 edition where no one could miss it (“Hawkeye heroes”).
For once the headlines were not about natural disasters, sex scandals or politics, but about kindness and courage. How inspirational!
Although vaguely aware of this program before, the information provided in the article as well as the photos and bios of the children really brought the message home. As a retired nurse who once worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and as a mother of a child who for years was a patient of the Pediatric Pulmonary Department there, I am well aware, not only of the struggle that these families face day by day, but also how thankful they are to have access to great care at the university hospitals.
Having the Hawks football team, with their warm hearts, willing to participate in making children’s dreams come true just tops it all off. To co-founder Cheryl Hodgson, who helped create this program 8 years ago, I salute you for bringing much needed joy into this world.
