Letter: Grassley, Ernst put party before country

It was dismaying watching Sen. Chuck Grassley play a key role in stealing a Supreme Court pick from President Barack Obama. Judge Antonin Scalia’s death occurred more than a year before the 2016 election but the Senator said we had to wait until after the election so we would know the “will of the people.” Apparently the will of the people who elected Obama didn’t count for much. It was a transparent power grab by Grassley and Mitch McConnell cloaked in constitutional sanctimony.

Now we find Sen. Ernst participating in secretive meetings on Trumpcare, presumably so they can try and jam through a bad plan before people realize what they’re up to. Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley said during the Obamacare deliberations Democrats accepted over 120 Republican amendments in committee alone. With the Grassley/Ernst Senate there are no committee deliberations and to this point no hearings. If they had the courage of their convictions they would let Americans see what their plan entails before voting. After chirping for eight years about “repeal and replace” it is apparent that the only plan they have is to give a huge tax cut to the rich. The uproar over the House plan has them running scared. Even these tone deaf Republicans are starting to realize the truth: America’s just not that into you.
