Letter: Golf course coverage raises questions

I read the recent article about the Cedar Rapids golf budget with intense interest. I am an avid golfer, who has played all of the Cedar Rapids public golf courses for a couple of decades. I have followed the evolvement of the “situation” of the Cedar Rapids public golf system since The Gazette chose to cover it. Your coverage has raised many questions.

1. Why has the coverage never included background information including recognition of the fact that the golf industry is experiencing a significant reduction in the number of golfers both statewide and throughout the nation?

2. Why did the coverage never include a description of the ongoing golf staff strategies developed and initiated to reduce expenses (significant staff reductions included)?

3. Why was the title of the Oct. 23 article, “C.R. golf budget still bleeding red?” It is negative and misleading. The fact is the first quarter numbers you quoted reflect positive improvement for the golf courses.

My experience with the entire Cedar Rapids public golf staff has always been extremely positive; they epitomize professionalism. Your negative coverage is unwarranted! Tell the entire story and cite positive changes and success.
