Letter: Glass Road repairs were much needed

Mary A. Craig has written letters twice about the Glass Road improvements and in her last letter she pleaded for answers (“Glass Road received special treatment,” June 8). I will attempt to answer her concerns.

She has stated twice that Glass Road received new curbs and that is correct. I believe the reason for that was because the old ones were removed so that the street could be widened and new curbs installed. The street was resurfaced from Edgewood Road to Wenig Road which is also correct. The reason for both of those improvements at this time was because Glass Road was going to carry more traffic because of improvements to 42nd Street, which are underway. The reason Glass Road does not have bike lanes is because it is not wide enough.

We can be Monday morning quarterbacks about many subjects in life, but Glass Road needs to come off the list and be replaced with some other worthy topics.

Our roads fell into disrepair and for years this issue was not addressed. Now that it is being taken care of it is like major surgery — painful. As far as the overall road construction in Cedar Rapids, I believe the saying “Dammed if you do, dammed if you don’t” fits.
