Letter: Give Cedar Rapids a casino to be proud of

I’m tired of listening and reading about other cities and towns not wanting Cedar Rapids to have a casino. All the drawings in the casino benefit the locals who can go there daily to enter them. Those of us who come from other towns can’t stick around or drive there for every drawing so we get no benefits other then to spend our money so they can reap the harvest.

Washington County stated that if we get a casino it would take dollars from them and previous dollars paid by the casino added to their library and other improvements. That is all well and good, but why should money spent by Cedar Rapids residents do only good in other counties and cities?

We would like to have that money come back into our coffers and maybe give us a little tax relief or improve our city properties.

They don’t limit bars or grocery stores or churches because they cannibalize other bars and stores so why should they limit the number of casinos?

Give the city a casino they can be proud of, not a mini one that only gives us the benefit of gambling. We want one with restaurants and entertainment, too.

I also do not see why we need a panel of five people who have nothing to gain or lose by what goes in Cedar Rapids. We should be able to vote and determine what we want here in this town.
