Letter: Fireworks legislation is good for the state

I support the Iowa Legislature and former Gov. Terry Branstad’s decision to legalize fireworks in Iowa. I think it is good for the state in terms of generating tax revenue and the efforts to keep the budget balanced, and I do personally enjoy shooting them off.

I’ve seen the letters to the editor pushing for a repeal and I am concerned that the actions of a few are going to affect all of us. The hours set by the state to me seem reasonable. Can the dates be more limited in Cedar Rapids? Maybe. I live in Marion and the City Council already has done that.

Additionally, the law and ordinances need to be enforced. Thursday night I heard a boom or two after 10 p.m. and have no issue with that person being prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If law enforcement finds themselves short of resources, we as citizens could be organized to help out in terms of reporting and so forth.

Those of us who enjoy fireworks need to be responsible in our behavior.

I also will say that instead of reacting emotionally, we need to look for a solid answer on how to manage this and be fair to those on both sides of the issue.
