Letter: Ashley Vanorny is the voice we need

This election cycle we have a choice in the District 5 City Council race as Ashley Vanorny heads into a runoff with incumbent Justin Shields.

I am the business manager/financial secretary of Eastern Iowa Plumbers and Pipefitters and I can personally attest to the great stock Vanorny comes from, having personally known her late father Dan Vanorny who was a member of IBEW Local 204. Dan and I worked together at Duane Arnold over the years and I have known Ashley and her family for over 30 years.

There is a reason her dad was proud of her. She is very much like him in that she is smart, hardworking, and extremely capable of managing any task put before her. I have been very impressed with her. Like most candidates, she completed the Hawkeye Area Labor Council candidate packet when she expressed interest in running. Her answers clearly represented her knowledge of union values and great ethics. She will represent the City of Cedar Rapids and District 5 well on City Council, bringing a much needed voice and energy.

I am personally recommending her for District 5. She gets my vote and I hope that you will give her yours so we can elect the candidate we deserve and need for our district and city. She led the polls on Nov. 7 for a good reason, she’s the right vote for unions and District 5. Remember to get out and vote Vanorny this Dec. 5. I know I will.
