Never been more ready to serve

I am running for city council because you deserve permanent flood protection, strong economic growth, improved infrastructure and safer neighborhoods.

You have my word I always will listen, engage and involve you, the citizen. If you’re looking for an honest and common-sense approach to local politics, I’m your man.

The city is facing a funding shortage for flood protection — too many lives, homes and businesses are at risk. As a community, we need to start the conversation now on local funding options.

I will work to continue diversifying our economy, welcoming new businesses to Cedar Rapids, encouraging entrepreneurship and, most importantly, protecting our homegrown industries like Rockwell Collins.

Our roads are failing. Paving for Progress is showing results and I support this program. We, as a community, need to start the conversation now on what we want to do when the current local-option sales tax expires. I support extending the tax as citizens won’t bear the entire burden of paying for repairs.

Crime has decreased this year, but it’s the type of crime that I’m concerned about. As a council member, I will work to reduce the “shots fired” epidemic in Cedar Rapids. I will engage with the SET task force and use their findings as a guideline to help tackle issues related to poverty, housing and youth programming.

I’m a husband, proud father, trusted business leader and community volunteer. I’ve never been more ready to serve you, the citizens of District 1. I’m ready to get to work.

• Ryan Russell is a candidate for Cedar Rapids City Council, District 1
