Koch Brothers love Iowa. Will Iowa ever love them back?

Koch Industries getting involved with Iowa-based Meredith

Charles and David Koch are back in Iowa headlines, following the announcement the tycoons are backing a major media deal involving Time Inc. and Des Moines-based Meredith.

The magazine deal is just the latest example of the Koch brothers’ ongoing love affair with Iowa.

For starters, Koch Industries and its subsidiaries operate throughout Iowa, including a crude oil pipeline and several ethanol plants.

The Koch-backed activist group Americans for Prosperity and its allies have been active in Iowa politics for the past several years. That organization’s involvement in a 2013 Coralville City Council election earned the town coverage from the national media, including the New York Times and Comedy Central’s Daily Show.

Earlier this year, the Charles Koch Foundation finalized a deal to provide $1.7 million to support an economic research unit at Iowa State University. I wrote then outrage over the deal was questionable, considering all of the other outside money flowing into our public universities.

Many liberals submit to blind rage at the mention of Koch money. A quick review of reader comments on this week’s Meredith news reveals allegations of a grand conspiracy by the Kochs to monopolize the media and inject pro-Trump magazine covers into every American household.

Never mind that they refused to support Donald Trump in the 2016 election. Or that they supported gay marriage before either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Or that they are America’s most influential backers of criminal justice reform and limited military intervention.

I, for one, welcome our new corporate overlords.
