FAIRFAX — A Benton County man was killed Wednesday morning west of Cedar Rapids after his vehicle crossed the median and collided with another vehicle.
A vehicle driven by John Gibbs, 62, of Vinton, was headed east on Highway 30 at 7:46 a.m. when the vehicle left the highway and entered the median, striking multiple crash-guard sand barrels, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said.
The vehicle came back onto the highway, where it was struck by a vehicle driven by Bruce Gardner, 67, of Garrison. Gardner’s vehicle came to rest on the highway. Gibbs’ vehicle landed on its top south of the highway by the 246B exit to Fairfax, the sheriff’s office said in the release.
Gibbs was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, where he was later pronounced dead, the release said.
Gardner was taken to UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Both men were wearing seat belts, authorities said, and were the only occupants of their vehicles.
