Driver seriously injured Friday after fleeing from police was not registered owner of the car

Police began to pursue vehicle of owner wanted on assault charge

CEDAR RAPIDS — Update as of Monday, Aug. 28:

Public safety spokesperson Greg Buelow said the driver of the vehicle was identified as Da’Quan Dy’Shon Jefferson, 22. Jefferson was not the registered owner of the vehicle, who Buelow said had a warrant for failure to appear on an assault charge. Buelow said he did not have an update on Jefferson’s medical condition.

At about 11 a.m. Friday, Cedar Rapids police officers attempted to stop a vehicle with a possible wanted suspect.

Officers spotted an adult male in a Pontiac Grand AM near 15th Street and E Avenue NE.

The registered owner of the vehicle had a warrant for failure to appear on an assault charge, Cedar Rapids public safety spokesperson Greg Buelow said in an email.

At that time, the suspect fled at a “high rate of speed,” Buelow said in an email. Officers did not continue to chase the Grand AM, but as they continued along E Avenue, they discovered the suspect had hit a light pole at 23rd Street NE. The suspect was seriously injured and is being transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Buelow said as of 2 p.m. Friday. officers are still working to confirming who was driving the vehicle.
