Police: Man tried to avoid arrest by driving through parking ramp
IOWA CITY — An Iowa City man unsuccessfully attempted to avoid arrest by driving through a parking ramp, police said.
According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, around 4 a.m. Sunday, 27-year-old John R. Odeen was seen going 34 mph in a 25 mph zone. Police tried to pull Odeen over near the intersection of Burlington and Linn streets, but he did not stop.
Police said Odeen pulled into the Capitol Street parking ramp and came to a short stop before accelerating and breaking through the arm of the gate. Odeen continued to speed through the ramp before coming to a stop at the top of the ramp. He was then taken into custody.
Odeen showed signs of intoxication, smelled of alcohol and had vomit on the side of his car, police said. He refused all breath, blood and urine tests. Odeen is also barred from driving until July 2020 for being a habitual offender, police said.
Odeen faces charges of third offense drunken driving, a Class D felony; driving while barred, an aggravated misdemeanor; eluding, a serious misdemeanor; fifth-degree criminal mischief and operating a vehicle without an interlock device, both simple misdemeanors.
