Police: Iowa City man assaulted 8-year-old

IOWA CITY — An Iowa City man is accused of assaulting an 8-year-old boy.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, the assault occurred Feb. 10 at a home in the 1100 block of Ash Street. Authorities said officers were called to the home by the boy’s mother after 38-year-old Manuel T. Trevizo, Jr. allegedly grabbed the boy and punched him multiple times with a closed fist.

Police said when they arrived Trevizo was “clearly intoxicated” and denied that anything had happened. However, police said the boy had an “obvious” injury and complained of pain. The boy and his mother both said Trevizo was responsible for the assault, police said.

Trevizo was arrested and faces charges of assault with intent to inflict serious injury, an aggravated misdemeanor; and child endangerment causing bodily injury, a Class D felony. If convicted of both offenses, Trevizo would face up to seven years in prison.
