IOWA CITY — A North Liberty man faces burglary and drunken driving charges after being caught inside an Iowa City business early Thursday morning.

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, officers responded to a burglary alarm at Spenler Tire, 140 Highway 1 W, at 3:32 a.m. Responding officers discovered a broken window and saw someone moving inside the building, police said.

Police said the suspect, Christopher A. Crawford, 27, eventually responded to officers’ orders and came out of the glass hole. Crawford admitted to breaking the window and entering the building to find a place to sleep. A keyholder for the business said drawers inside the business had been opened, police said.

Police said Crawford smelled strongly of alcohol, showed signs of intoxication and “admitted to being very drunk.” His blood alcohol content was determined to be .143 percent. Additionally, police found a McDonald’s bag inside Crawford’s vehicle and staff at the nearby McDonald’s said they recalled him going through the drive-through just before police received the alarm call.

Crawford faces charges of third-degree burglary, a felony, and drunken driving, a serious misdemeanor.
