Man walks into Coffee with a Cop with illegally possessed handgun

Arrested for carrying a concealed weapon

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man faces a weapons charge after walking into a police event with an illegally possessed handgun.

Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said officers were at Brewed Awakenings, 1271 First Avenue SE, Monday morning for Coffee with a Cop, a semiregular event where citizens can have informal conversations with law enforcement. Police said around 11 a.m., 25-year-old Dallas R. Esparza entered the business.

Buelow said Esparza had a handgun tucked into his waistband. Officers noticed the weapon and found his permit to carry had been revoked in June for possession of a controlled substance.

Esparza was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon.
