Police say Cedar Rapids man assaulted woman, stole her car

CORALVILLE — A Cedar Rapids man is accused of assaulting a woman and stealing her car last month.

According to Coralville police criminal complaints, officers were called to 205 Second St. at 2:14 a.m. Nov. 4 for a report of a motor vehicle theft. The victim told police that 22-year-old Eddie C. Ayers began punching out the windows in her car and then stole it. Police said Ayers assaulted and strangled the victim.

While conducting an interview with the victim at the police station, she got a text from Ayers indicating he would kill her, police said.

Ayers was arrested on Dec. 2 and now faces charges of second-degree robbery, second-degree theft, domestic assault, first-degree harassment and fourth-degree criminal mischief. His bail has been set at $20,000 cash or surety, according to jail records.
