Cedar Rapids man arrested after robbery with tire iron

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Cedar Rapids man is accused of hitting another man over the head with a tire iron.

According to the Linn County Attorney’s Office and Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow, Cedar Rapids police responded to Unity Point St. Luke’s Hospital on July 19 for a 30-year-old man who had been hit with a tire iron. During their investigation, police learned the victim had been assaulted in the 3000 block of J Street SW and the assailant — 19-year-old Derek K. Morrison — told the man to give him “everything you have.”

Police said the victim suffered several lacerations and the assault was captured on a nearby security camera.

Morrison was not captured until Thursday morning when Hiawatha police received a call about three men with backpacks and flashlights going through vehicles in the 1000 block of Emmons Street, said Hiawatha Police Chief Dennis Marks. Marks said officers spotted one person standing next to a running vehicle in the fire station driveway. The driver of the vehicle — later determined to be Morrison — fled and eventually got out of the moving vehicle in the area of Leisure Boulevard and Blairs Ferry Road.

Cedar Rapids and Hiawatha police found Morrison hiding in a Dumpster at the Agin Court apartment complex. He was taken into custody around 4:15 a.m.

Morrison faces one count of first-degree robbery, a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison.
