IOWA CITY — A man who threw tomatoes at Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during a speech on the University of Iowa campus earlier this year will avoid jail time.

According to court documents, 28-year-old Andrew J. Alemao pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct on Monday. As part of the plea agreement, the Johnson County Attorney’s Office agreed to recommend a $65 fine for Alemao and no jail time. The county attorney’s office also said it would not pursue an assault charge against Alemao.

Alemao was scheduled to go to trial on the disorderly conduct charge later this month and would have faced up to 30 days in jail and a $625 fine.

University of Iowa police and the U.S. Secret Service took Alemao into custody on Jan. 26 during a campaign stop by Trump at the UI Field House after Alemao was seen throwing two tomatoes at Trump. Neither tomato reportedly struck Trump.

Alemao’s attorney, Alexander Smith, said he did not have any comment on his client’s behalf.
