Spirit Lake man faces prison time for Iowa City assault

Police: Incident dislodged man's teeth, left him unable to eat solid food

IOWA CITY — A Spirit Lake man faces prison time after police say he assaulted another man in Iowa City and left him unable to eat solid food.

According to an Iowa City police criminal complaint, the assault happened in the Pedestrian Mall around 1:50 a.m. on April 21. Police said Keaton R. Leach, 19, approached the man in a bar and began “verbally berating him.” The man tried to get away from Leach, but Leach punched him in the face, police said.

Police said the man was knocked unconscious by the punch and fell to the ground. The impact of the punch dislodged two teeth, which required surgery to fix and prohibited the man from eating solid food, police said. The man told police Leach continued to send him threatening text messages after the incident. Police said the man knew Leach and identified him by name.

Leach faces charges of assault causing serious injury, a felony, and second-degree harassment, a serious misdemeanor. The charges carry a potential sentence of six years in prison.
