Police investigate shooting on Lakeside Drive in Iowa City; no one hurt

Two nearby schools cancel outside activities as precaution

No one was injured when a gun was discharged during a dispute near an elementary school in Iowa City Monday afternoon.

According to an Iowa City police news release, officers were called out at 12:32 p.m. Monday for a report of a man that was shot near Grant Wood Elementary School, 1930 Lakeside Drive. Responding officers determined there had been an incident involving a gun at Lakeside Drive and Amber Lane, but that no one was injured.

When more officers arrived on the scene, a foot chase ensued when several subjects fled from the area. Ultimately, three people were captured.

Witnesses told police that after brief altercation involving six to seven people, one suspect pulled a gun and shot it into the ground.

Charges are now pending in the case as the police department’s investigations division follows up on the incident. Iowa City police were assisted by University of Iowa police and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Grant Wood and Alexander Elementary School, 571 Sycamore St., were asked to cancel outdoor activities and keep their doors locked during the investigation. Police said the schools were not involved in the incident.

Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information in this case. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 358-8477.
