Suspect assaulted resident, fled into alley, police said

IOWA CITY — Iowa City police are investigating a burglary and seeking help in locating a suspect.

Officers responded to a home in the 700 block of East Fairchild Street around 10 p.m. Thursday for a report of a burglary in progress. The victim told police a man was in his garage.

Police said when the victim confronted the man, the suspect assaulted him by hitting him over the head with a hard object. The victim suffered minor injuries, police said.

The suspect then fled into a south alley.

Police said the suspect is of average height and build and was wearing dark clothing and a red cap. He possibly had white or cream-colored paint splattered on his clothing.

The incident remains under investigation and citizens in the neighborhood are asked to call police if they see anything out of the ordinary. Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at (319) 358-8477.
