Fire on Bowery Street in Iowa City has damage contained to building exterior

A fire located on the front porch of a residence on Bowery Street was contained by Iowa City Firefighters Wednesday with no injuries reported and damage limited to the building’s exterior.

According to a media release from the Iowa City Fire Department, firefighters responded to a building fire at 619 Bowery Street at after receiving a call at approximately 6:54 p.m. on Wednesday. As the first unit arrived four minutes after the call they reported a working struture fire on the front porch of the building.

All of the building’s occupants had noticed the fire and exited safely before the arrival of the fire department, according to the release. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished, according to the release, with fire damage limited to the exterior of the building.

There are no damage estimates at this time, according to the release, but none of the building’s occupants were displaced by the fire.

According to the release, 20 firefighters responded to the initial alarm. Outside support and assistance was provided by the Iowa City Police Department, Johnson County Ambulance and Mid-American Energy.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Department, according to the release.
