Fire damages basement of Iowa City home

IOWA CITY — The cause of a basement fire in an Iowa City home remains under investigation.

According to an Iowa City Fire Department news release, crews were called to 2251 Russell Drive at 1:48 a.m. Wednesday for a report of a fire in the basement. Firefighters arrived on scene three minutes later and found the residents had evacuated the home.

The basement fire was extinguished within 23 minutes of arrival, the fire department said. The home sustained fire damage to the basement and smoke damage throughout the residence, authorities said.

A loss estimate is not yet available.
