Child struck, killed by tanker truck near Fairbank
Death appears to be accidental; no charges pending
A 22-month-old boy was struck and killed Saturday morning by a truck driven by a Cedar Rapids man.
According a news release, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 report of an accident involving a tanker truck and a young child at a residence in the 1100 block of Fairbank-Amish Boulevard east of Fairbank.
According to the sheriff’s office, a 2009 Peterbuilt truck owned by Stewart Dell Inc. and driven by Eric Gilliam, 38, of Cedar Rapids, was at the residence and was preparing to leave. As Gilliam began to move forward, Samuel Helmuth, 22 months old, who lived at the residence, ran in front of the truck and was struck by the driver-side front tire. Gilliam was unable to see the child because of a blind spot caused by the nose of the truck, investigators said.
The incident happened in the driveway and yard of the residence. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident appears to be accidental and no charges are pending, the sheriff’s office said.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fairbank Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, along with the Buchanan County medical examiner.
