Cedar Rapids robbery suspects apprehended after short chase

Suspects allegedly displayed a handgun in Casey's parking lot

CEDAR RAPIDS — Two men are accused of displaying a handgun and stealing a cellular phone, clothing and shoes during a robbery at a Casey’s General Store Saturday afternoon. 

Police said the incident happened at 1:32 p.m. in the Casey’s parking lot at 5050 Northland Ave. NE, when Delbert McNeil, 25, and Marcus Willis, 21, robbed a vehicle with several people inside that had pulled into the parking lot. McNeil allegedly displaying the handgun, police said.

Cedar Rapids officers were dispatched to the scene, and the suspect vehicle was eventually located at the intersection of Center Point Road and 42nd Street NE. The suspects attempted to elude the pursuing officer and initiated a short chase that ended when the suspect vehicle crashed through a chain link fence near Center Point Road and Lake Avenue NE, police said.

McNeil, Willis and two other individuals who had been in the vehicle then fled on foot, but officers were able to apprehend all four suspects within 10 minutes. No injuries were reported. Several citizens helped point out the direction in which the suspects fled, police said.

McNeil was charged with second-degree robbery.  Willis was charged with second-degree robbery and interference with official acts.  A third suspect, identified as Anthony Walker, 21, was arrested on a forgery warrant from the Linn County Sheriff's Office. The fourth individual has not been charged at this time. 

The incident remains under investigation.
