Crews found a “hoarder situation” when responding to a garage fire near downtown Cedar Rapids early Wednesday morning.

According to a Cedar Rapids Fire Department media release, crews responded to 917 7th Ave. SE at 3:46 a.m., where they found a garage fire extending to the house. The front door was blocked, but crews were able to enter through a back door. The residence was unoccupied at the time, and the fire was quickly brought under control, according to the release.

The garage was a total loss and the house sustained moderate damage.

The fire remains under investigation.
