Cedar Rapids bicyclist seriously injured

A Cedar Rapids man was seriously injured Saturday while riding a bicycle in Ely.

Linn County sheriff’s deputies, Linn County Sheriff’s Rescue, Ely Fire Department, Area Ambulance and Lifeguard Air Ambulance responded to State Street and Rock Island Drive in Ely at 1:58 p.m. for a report of rider who fell off his bicycle and was injured.

Toby Dean Freese, 46, of Cedar Rapids, was unresponsive when emergency personnel arrived. Witnesses said Freese lost control of his bicycle and fell off. He was not wearing a helmet.

Freese was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by Lifeguard Air Ambulance with life-threatening injuries, the Linn County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

The crash remains under investigation.
