CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids mayoral candidate Monica Vernon is being endorsed by local labor unions, according to a statement from her campaign on Tuesday.

The Cedar Rapids/Iowa City Building Trades Council AFL-CIO voted unanimously to endorse Vernon, who is among seven candidates for mayor, according to the statement.

“I’ve spent years working with Monica, and I’ve seen firsthand how she worked with both labor and business to help rebuild after the devastating flood that hit the city in 2008,” Council President Pat Loeffler said in the statement. “She’s made it her priority to keep and create good-paying jobs right here in Cedar Rapids.”

The Building Trades Council is made up of 18 unions mainly in the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City areas. Four additional unions have also endorsed Vernon, including Carpenters Local 308; Ironworkers Local 89; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 405; and Plumbers, Fitters, Welders and HVAC Service Techs Local 125, according to the statement.
