CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa Lottery officials are reminding local Powerball players to double-check their tickets to see if they are the winner of an unclaimed lottery prize.

A month has passed since a $2 million winning ticket was purchased at the Hawkeye Convenience Store, 2330 Wiley Blvd. SW in Cedar Rapids, and lottery officials say no one has stepped forward as the winner.

The winning numbers in the drawing, which took place July 16, were 11-17-40-50-62. The Powerball was 26.

Mary Neubauer, vice president of external relations at Iowa Lottery, said the winning ticket had all five numbers, but not the correct Powerball number.

The individual who purchased the ticket also added Power Play, an option that allows the winner to increase the prize. This doubled the prize from its original $1 million value.

Iowa Lottery officials held a news conference Tuesday morning at the Hawkeye Convenience Store to serve as a “one month reminder” for ticket holders to check their numbers, Neubauer said.

“It’s not entirely unheard of for winners to wait this long, but the one month mark makes us nervous,” Neubauer said.

The winner, or winners, have until July 17, 2017 to claim the money. If the prize is not claimed by then, Neubauer said the money will go back into a pool for future Iowa Lottery prizes.

Neubauer said prizes of this size are typically claimed quickly, but officials are hopeful the winner is merely waiting in order to make financial arrangements and to speak with a lawyer. However, it is possible the individual may have thrown away the ticket, or has merely not checked it.

Hawkeye Convenience Store received a $2,000 bonus from the Iowa Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

Lottery officials did not release any information on the date and time the ticket was sold, or a description of the ticket purchaser, since these are identifying factors officials use when someone comes forward to claim a prize. The winner will need to claim the $2 million at the Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive.

Individuals who need information or questions regarding the Powerball prize can call the Iowa Lottery at 515-725-7900.
