I-380 work to keep Wilson Avenue ramp closed until October

Opening it now would have been dangerous, IDOT decides

CEDAR RAPIDS — Work on Interstate 380 is expected to keep the Wilson Avenue SW northbound on-ramp closed until Oct. 15.

The on-ramp was supposed to reopen earlier this month. It has been closed since mid-June due to work on the I-380 northbound bridge over 15th and 16th avenues.

An official with the Iowa Department of Transportation said it was decided, after further review. to keep the on-ramp closed to traffic during phase two of the project, which began last Friday.

“If this ramp would have been opened, drivers from this ramp would have a very short distance and almost no sight distance when they are about to get to the mainline,” Iowa DOT engineer John Vu said. “This would be very dangerous.”

Traffic is being detoured to the 33rd Avenue SW exit.

The work on I-380 includes a pavement overlay of the northbound bridge deck over 15th and 16th avenues SW.

Both northbound and southbound travel have been affected as traffic is squeezed on both sides to accommodate the work.

The work is scheduled to be finished in October.
