CEDAR RAPIDS — Mother and former business owner Monica Vernon is drawing on both experiences in her first campaign television commercial of the general election cycle.
Vernon, a Cedar Rapids Democrat challenging 1st District GOP Rep. Rod Blum, is releasing “Kids,” a 30-second ad 84-days before the election to call on Congress to quit its “childish bickering” and get something done to help middle class families.
“I know firsthand the challenges of raising a family and starting a small business — making sure homework is done while meeting payroll,” Vernon said. Vernon founded her own small business more than 25 years ago while raising her three daughters with her husband, Bill.
“Hardworking Iowans and small business owners aren’t looking for handouts or special deals, just a fair shot at success,” she said.
She said she is running to put her experience to work building an economy that helps Iowa families to get ahead, supporting affordable child care, expanded family sick leave and equal pay for equal work.
