Roads to be closed, detours established, motorists encouraged to find other routes
CEDAR RAPIDS — The railroad crossings on Blairs Ferry Road NE and 42nd Street NE will be replaced in consecutive weeks this month, resulting in the full closure of the roads at those locations.
First up is the Blairs Ferry Road railroad crossing, which will be replaced during the week of Oct. 16-20, weather permitting. Blairs Ferry Road will be closed at the tracks all week, resulting in detours.
Detour routes include: Eastbound traffic to use the southbound interstate frontage road to the Collins Road interchange, east to Center Point Road, then north to Blairs Ferry Road. Westbound traffic to go south on Center Point Road to Collins Road, west to the northbound interstate frontage road to Blairs Ferry Road.
Next is the 42nd Street crossing, which will be replaced during the week of Oct. 23-27, also weather permitting. 42nd Street will be closed at the tracks all week, resulting in detours. The Cedar Valley Nature Trail also will be closed north of 42nd Street during the project.
Detour routes include: Eastbound traffic to use the northbound interstate frontage road to Collins Road interchange, east to Center Point Road and south to 42nd Street. Westbound traffic to go north on Center Point Road to Collins Road, taking southbound interstate frontage road 42nd Street.
All interstate ramps will remain open at both interchanges throughout the process, Cedar Rapids officials said in a news release.
Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes during the projects.
