Children, family issues forum tonight in Hiawatha

HIAWATHA — Three legislative candidates will discuss issues affecting Linn County families at a forum from 6 to 8 p.m. at HACAP, 1515 Hawkeye Drive, Hiawatha.

Sen. Liz Mathis, D-Cedar Rapids, and Democratic challengers Mark Seidl and Molly Donahue from House 67 and 68, respectively, have confirmed their participation.

The forum is hosted by the local organization Linn Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse, which seeks to reduce child abuse and neglect in through prevention efforts that focus on supporting and educating parents and caregivers. Several statewide agencies serving children are sponsoring the event,

According to the council, Linn County has a child abuse rate of 9.88 per 1,000 kids, 11.8 percent of children living in poverty, and 31.5 percent of households are headed by single parents.
