Xavier High School cancels classes for funeral

Mass for Justin 'Mick' Kramer takes place Friday

CEDAR RAPIDS — Classes at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids are canceled Friday, Sept. 9, to allow students and faculty to attend a funeral Mass for Justin “Mick” Kramer.

Also, the freshman retreat scheduled for Friday has been rescheduled to Sept. 16.

All activities on Sept. 9 are to be held as scheduled.

Kramer, 77, who taught Latin in Cedar Rapids Catholic schools for more than 50 years, died Sunday at his Cedar Rapids home.

Born in 1939 in Dyersville, Kramer started teaching at Regis High School in 1965. When Regis merged with La Salle High School to form Xavier in 1998, Kramer left teaching to become a guidance counselor. He also worked as a driver education instructor and basketball and golf coach.

According to his obituary, he earned the nickname “Mick” for his success as a baseball player and love for the New York Yankees.

Kramer earned his bachelor’s degree from Loras College and his master’s degree from the University of Iowa. His wife of 48 years, Dolores, preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Mary (Brad) Goodfellow of Iowa City and Joe (Angie) Kramer, as well as two siblings, several grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral Mass takes place at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2310 First Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, 4200 First Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids. Burial follows the funeral at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
