CEDAR RAPIDS — The new Eastern Iowa festival called newbo evolve has generated a number of questions about different aspects of the event.
The three-day festival scheduled for Aug. 3 to 5 in the New Bohemia District with other events in downtown venues focuses on music, fashion, arts and technology.
Three-day passes are $375 and include preferred seating to pop music headliners Maroon 5 and Kelly Clarkson, and exclusive access to several other events including appearances by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, director and author John Waters, fashion stylist Carson Kressley, fashion designer Christian Siriano and woodworker Clint Harp from HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.”
Individual passes are available for Maroon 5 and Clarkson but not the other speakers.
The Gazette contacted GO Cedar Rapids, which is putting on the festival, with questions readers have posed on social media, directly to staff or on a questions submission form. Here’s the questions and responses from Jennifer Pickar, GO Cedar Rapids director of communications and marketing.
Q: Street closures, will new businesses in the neighborhood be open in time for the fest?
A: “We are meeting with the city of Cedar Rapids at the end of this month to discuss specific street closures. As for new businesses opening, the only one I can think of off the top of my head is Fong’s Pizza opening this spring.”
Q: How many three-day passes have been sold through this weekend? How many concert tickets have been sold?
A: “Tickets and passes are selling.”
Q: If this is about Cedar Rapids, why isn’t there a local connection? Why are local performers and speakers not included?

A: “We will be announcing more local connections as we continue to fill out the schedule.”
Q: Where will people park? How will they get around during the festival?
A: “We are meeting with Park Cedar Rapids, MedQuarter and the Czech Village over the next months and will share details once there is a formal plan.”
Q: How will this impact business in NewBo and downtown Cedar Rapids?
A: “We anticipate this will be very positive for businesses in the area as we bring tens of thousands of potential customers to their neighborhood.”
Q: This is billed as capturing the Bohemian spirit. How does it do that?
A: “There have been a lot of definitions of what Bohemian is, but the current definition says, “anyone who creates is Bohemian.” So Bohemian is anyone. It’s potentially everyone. Newbo evolve celebrates the creative spirit through art, music, dance, food, fashion and technology.”
Q: When are the next announcements coming?
A: “Once we have additional contracts signed we will make more announcements.”
Q: Is zip lining included in the pass price (or what will it cost) and what age will be able to do it?
A: “A discounted zip line ride is included with the three-day pass. We are working with the zip line company on price, hours of operations, etc.”
Q: Ticket options: Will you be able to buy a separate ticket to some of the talks like you can for the concerts?
A: “Not at this time.”
Q: Location: What if the weather is bad? Why is it not on May’s Island?
A: “The events are rain or shine. If it is storming, the concerts may be delayed. The concerts are not on May’s Island because we needed a larger space.”
Q: I’d like to hear more about Mission Creek! That’s a great price for 6 days!
