Schedule released for free movie series in Iowa City

IOWA CITY — There will be superheroes, animated darlings and 1980s classic characters on the University of Iowa Pentacrest outside Macbride Hall this summer.

The Summer of the Arts released its free movie series lineup this week. The free movie series is a 14-year tradition in Iowa City of bringing blockbuster hits, nostalgic throwbacks and family-friendly movies to the University of Iowa Pentacrest.

The series kicks off on June 9 with the epic 2017 superhero flick “Wonder Woman.”

The movies are diverse and span the entire summer, offering opportunities to catch 1980s cult classics like “Pretty in Pink” and also contemporary favorites like “Hidden Figures.” The complete 2018 lineup:

• June 9: “Wonder Woman” (2017)

• June 16: “In & Out” (1997)

• June 23: “Sing” (2016)

• July 7: “The Great Outdoors” (1988)

• July 14: “Pretty in Pink” (1986)

• July 21: “Kubo and the Two Strings” (2016)

• July 28: “Ghostbusters” (2016)

• Aug. 4: “Hidden Figures” (2016)

• Aug. 11: “Mulan” (1998)

• Aug. 18: “The Muppets” (2010)

• Aug. 25: “Star Wars, the Last Jedi” (2017)

Films begin at sundown, meaning start times vary as the days lengthen and shorten. In case of inclement weather, the festivities will be moved into the Macbride Hall Auditorium, with movies starting at 8:30 p.m.
