WATERLOO — Kelly King and Hannah Sherman made the decision to try for another state tournament as a doubles team, oh, within minutes of the end of the last one.

Dissatisfied with a fourth-place finish last season, the Cedar Rapids Washington seniors will get the chance to better themselves after winning a Class 2A regional doubles title Thursday at Waterloo West High School.

“Losing last year as juniors at state, that has been the overriding factor for them to continue to grow and they have,” Washington Coach John Gianforte said.

King and Sherman made relatively quick work of the regional field, surrendering just two games in three matches. The Warriors’ pair earned the state berth with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the semifinal over Katie Nowak and Lauren Resewehr of Linn-Mar, then dispatched another Lions’ duo, Whitney Guthrie and Piper Boysen, by the same score for the title.

“I’d say being aggressive was really helpful and just putting away the points,” King said. “Using our volleys and our overhands to get the matches done.”

This is the fourth state-qualifying bid for Sherman, and third in doubles. This will be the first time the two-time doubles semifinalist returns to state with the same partner, which has elevated not only the on-court chemistry between the two, but the camaraderie as well.

“It’s really awesome because we never get frustrated with each other,” said Sherman, who will play collegiately for Bryn Mawr (Pa.) College. “We’ll never get offended by one another.”

By virtue of the runner-up doubles finish, Guthrie and Boysen also claimed a state berth for Linn-Mar. The Lions were led by senior Ellie Anderson, who after regional runner-up placements as a freshman and junior, yielded just one game in three matches and claimed the regional crown.

“Finally winning my senior year is kind of special,” Anderson said. “My ball movement went really well. I didn’t make a lot of errors. I don’t think I double-faulted once for the day, so that is pretty good for me.”

At the 1A regional meet at Byrnes Park, Cedar Rapids Xavier freshman Sarah Abu-Nameh gutted out a tense singles quarterfinal against Franny Roche of Waterloo Columbus, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, then earned a state-tournament berth with an impressive 6-3, 6-0 win over Annika Koppes of Iowa Falls-Alden in the semifinal.

“I guess I just wanted it really bad,” Abu-Nameh said. “I didn’t think I’d make it that far as a freshman, but I’m really happy I did.”

The girls’ tennis individual state tournament begins June 1. The 2A field will be held at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex in Ankeny, while the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex in Iowa City will entertain the 1A qualifiers.
