CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids Xavier can cross one more thing off its preseason to-do list.

The Saints swept individual and team titles at the CRANDIC boys’ golf meet Tuesday at St. Andrews Golf Course. Senior Brad Karpick captured medalist honors, shooting 74 and helping Xavier to a 316 team total that topped runner-up Linn-Mar by three strokes.

Xavier has finished second previously in this meet, but Tim O’Brien said the crown was a first in his 11 years as head coach.

“I’m really proud of this W,” O’Brien said. “It was one of our goals this year. We knew we were playing here on our home course for the CRANDIC. They got it accomplished. I couldn’t be more pleased as their coach.”

The narrow tree-lined fairways with a strong wind in the afternoon made the course tough to navigate. Only eight golfers broke 80 on the par-70 course where Xavier plays its home meets.

The Saints had two of those scores. In addition to Karpick, senior Ryan Keating fired 77, tying Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Ian Johnston for fourth. Nick Recker provided a third solid score again for Xavier, shooting 82. Dan Bailey, the Saints’ No. 5 golfer, added 83, showing added depth.

“One thing that is showing is some of the maturity is starting to come forth from them being seasoned varsity golfers,” O’Brien said. “Our golfers in the four, five and six spots are getting better. As a team, we’re getting better.”

Karpick and Cedar Rapids Kennedy runner-up Brock Barnhart played in the same group. Each shot 37 on the front and Barnhart had a one-stroke lead going into the final hole. Karpick scored his third birdie in the last five holes and Barnhart bogeyed.

“I stayed patient all day,” Karpick said. “Coach and I talked last night. We knew patience would be key. We knew if we stayed patient we’d come out with a win.”

Karpick’s first birdie came on the par-4 14th hole. He stuck his approach shot within a couple feet and finished with the tap-in putt. He also had a birdie on the par-5 16th.

“That basically started it,” Karpick said. “I knew if I hit a great shot and put it close that I could make that. I just kept the momentum going toward the end of the round.”

Linn-Mar duo Cole Yearling and Jackson Woods each shot 78. Drew Brandel and Ben Greif added 81 and 82, respectively, for the Lions.

Iowa City West’s Kyle Spence was third with 76.
